~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mad Concrete Dreams (2026) is an intense Korean melodrama series that tells the story of an ordinary middle-aged city apartment building owner who is dragged into a pitiful and terrifying fake kidnapping scheme in an attempt to get out of debt. Veteran actor Ha Jung Woo (classic Korean films Parallel Life, Love Fiction, Tunnel, Chronicle Of A Blood Merchant) gives an incredible lead performance, realistically conveying the love he possesses for his family plus the worry of how his poor business and personal decisions might ultimately harm them and destroy their lives. I sure hope he wins several acting awards for his amazing performance!
The pace of this narrative is fast but leaves no emotional details unexplored; some humor even pops up from time to time, but the overall theme of real estate greed, that often reflects ambitious modern Korean society norms, gives the series more weight than the usual run of the mill thriller. In some ways it reminded me of the recent Ye Jin Son / Lee Byung Hun's Oscar nominated film No Other Choice directed by the renowned Oldboy and I'm A Cyborg But That's Okay director Park Chan Wook because it had a similar theme: debt can destroy you! Actually, real estate greed makes for a good drama and film theme for all people, in all countries, not just South Korea: stay away from anything that will cause you to take on enormous debt that you cannot handle comfortably. South Korea's "Yeonggul" phenomena, where the newer generations throw everything to the wind to buy real estate, is a very topical, compelling subject to explore in both Korean dramas and films today. This excellent series can be viewed on both Viki.com or HBO Max.
The Cast At Script Reading: Ha Jung Woo, Su Jeong Im,
Kim Jun Han, Krystal, and Shim Eun Kyung
The entire cast is beyond excellent in their roles! This includes my sentimental favorite Korean actress Su Jeong Im (who first hooked me into Korean entertainment years ago with dramas like I'm Sorry, I Love You, Melancholia, Chicago Typewriter, Search: WWW, Low Life, and classic films A Tale Of Two Sisters, Sad Movie, Lump Of Sugar, Time Renegades, Finding Mr. Destiny, Come Rain Come Shine); the always spellbinding actress Shim Eun Kyung (films Hansel and Gretel, Train To Busan, Sunny, Masquerade, and dramas The Legend, Bad Guy, Tomorrow's Cantabile, One Day Off) whom I have been watching with awe since her child star days; pretty Krystal (Heirs, Way Back Love, film Cobweb), and accomplished actor Kim Jun Han (Hospital Playlist, One Spring Night, Tell Me That You Love Me). You simply can't go wrong watching an outstanding cast like this one!
Then, for me, the icing on the cake was a supporting cameo appearance by my long time favorite heartthrob actor Nam Gil Kim (Shark, Bad Guy, Lovers, Song Of The Bandits, Trigger, Live Up To Your Name). Yet another unforgettable drama performance by this Star, made even more poignant because his detective character is murdered in the first episode! (But not before he sings a great song, LOL!). There's also an intriguing cameo appearance in the last episode by well loved actor Ju Ji Hoon (Trauma Code, Mask, Princess Hours, The Item, Jirisan).
All the actors here had great screen chemistry together. I usually give my highest grade, A+, to any drama I would easily watch again in a heartbeat because it's that mesmerizing. Mad Concrete Dreams delivers that result for me in spades! The drama was directed by Yim Pil Sung and written by Oh Han Ki. There are twelve episodes in total which hum along so well that you aren't even aware of time passing while you watch them! Good cliffhangers keep you going. I would love to see Korea do a season two in the future. I'd be all for that!
The Story:
We meet middle-aged family man Gi Su Jong (Ha Jung Woo) who owns an apartment building in a part of Seoul that isn't doing very well financially, therefore he finds himself hammered by constantly rising debt to cover all his expenses. He is married to Kim Sum (Su Jeong Im) who had worked in the medical field until they had their daughter Gi Da Rae (Park Seo Kyung) who was born deaf and required special care and schooling. She then devoted her life to raising their daughter so well that the girl actually succeeded brilliantly in school. However, as Su Jong sinks deeper and deeper into debt he even confiscates his daughter's future college funds that Kim Sum was relying on to have Da Rae go to a prestigious American college for the disabled. This infuriates Kim Sum and their marriage becomes rocky. He promises his wife that he had all along intended to replace the funds but Kim Sum is not impressed. Su Jong even "forgets" to attend marriage counseling sessions that his wife had set up for them. Again, not a good sign that this marriage could be saved!
Su Jong had even fallen back on part time jobs like food deliveries for local restaurants in order to try and pay the bills. HIs building has few tenants now because of a poor local economy and the ones who remain aren't enough to help him pay all his bills. When the building develops construction problems he has to learn to fix them himself, instead of hiring building pros. This could represent a potential disaster if the tasks aren't accomplished properly.
One of the few understanding family members Su Jong has is his brother-in-law, detective Kim Gyun (Nam Gil Kim). He never judges Su Jong but simply tries to help him out. The two men like to spend spare time socializing together in restaurants and at karaoke places. Kim Gyun even offers to give Su Jong his bank savings to help him and his sister out of their financial mess but Su Jong steadfastly refuses to take his money.
Brilliant Actress Shim Eun Kyung
She's Come A Long Way Since 2007's Hansel And Gretel Classic Film!
During all his family and business challenges there is a nefarious person watching him from a distance, the female president of a secretive nearby commercial real estate firm called Real Capital. Her name is Kim Yo Na (Shim Eun Kyung) and early on she proves herself to be completely evil, willing to do anything, even murder, to help her accomplish her goal of buying up as many commercial and residential buildings as possible in this downtrodden area of Seoul, in the hopes she can claim ownership of the whole residential area. She approaches building owners with offers to buy their buildings cheap and when the owners refuse she finds ways to kill them off!
In one instance she had tied up an owner in the basement of his building and then had the building condemned and destroyed with the man inside being crushed to death. Detective Kim Gyun begins to suspect something strange going on with this Real Capital business and sneaks into Yo Na's office when it is deserted to steal computer files implicating her in her shady business practices, especially in regards to her plan to destroy his brother-in-law Su Jong as her next victim. Of course this is discovered by clever Yo Na and she has one of her co-horts murder Detective Gyun and make it look like a hit and run "accident" on the street. (Here comes that white truck K-drama cliche again! lol!).
Su Jong and his family are devastated at Gyun's death, not to mention the local police force who had respected him. Now Su Jong is at risk for an even steeper decline into madness, so much so that he reluctantly falls for the hair-brained scheme of a close friend, who is also in personal debt, named Min Hwal Sung (Kim Jun Han), of forcefully kidnapping his own wife, named Jeon Yi Gyeong (Krystal), and placing her drugged out body on the basement floor of Su Jong's building, all in the hopes that her wealthy mother, Jeon Yang Ja (Kim Keum Soon), will pay a huge ransom of three billion won to free her daughter from the supposedly unknown kidnappers. Of course the mother falls for it, but the transfer of the money is loused up because Real Capital steals sleeping Yi Gyeong's body, and in trying to retrieve his own wife from the REAL kidnappers the husband of the victim ends up falling off a bridge, presumably to his death!
Su Jong's life spirals even more out of control and into a full blown catastrophe. His wife wants to leave him, his daughter no longer trusts him, there's more violence ahead in their lives, and on top of that he still refuses to sell his beloved building to pay off his debts, move away, and start life anew. Will ANYTHING or ANYONE on God's green earth help him to change his mind??? Is there any way he can redeem his life and restore himself to his family, as well as recompense in some way to the other people he hurt along the way? What will happen to the baddies like the employees of Real Capital who are out to destroy him and even target his family?
What makes Mad Concrete Dreams more than just a thriller series is the theme of the appeal of real estate greed, which reflects current South Korean society very accurately. "Yeongkkeul", where the young generation in their 30s and 40s are willing to risk everything to buy real estate in the hope that prices will continue to rise, can also be a dangerous endeavor long term, especially if the economy in general heads downward.
Lead actor Ha Jung Woo himself said in an interview that the series is like a "reminder" of how dangerous it is to go all out to buy a building without knowing your limits.
Mad Concrete Dreams does a great job of balancing tension with emotion. Su Jong becomes a character who stands on the edge of an abyss, both from debts that cannot be easily paid off, and from poor family decisions that continue to threaten his family's trust in him. The flawed kidnapping plot, and the shadow of the corrupt Real Capital business hiding behind it all, makes it almost impossible to wait for the next episode of this series. That communicates a sharp social story that is very addictive, that should not be missed by the devoted Korean drama fan! Enjoy!
