An outstanding
ensemble cast presented us with uniformly
unforgettable performances in this addictive crime
thriller Korean drama, A Bona fide Killer
(2026), starring the always brilliant lead actress
Gong Hyo Jin whom I have loved watching for twenty
years in dramas like Master's
Sun, It's
Okay That's Love, Thank
You, Jealousy
Incarnate, When
The Camellia Blooms, Pasta,
Snowman,
Ruler
Of Your Own World, The
Greatest Love, Producer,

Doo Let's Go To School, Hello
My Teacher, When
The Stars Gossip and films like A
Single Rider, The Most Ordinary Romance,
Missing, and Be With You. If you
admire her as much as I do then absolutely do not
miss this amazing thriller; you will have the
hardest time trying to tear yourself away from
watching it once you start! There's a reason why
almost every reviewer on Viki gave it a perfect 10
grade!
I must also add that I
was totally bowled over by the phenomenally
warm performance of the lead actor in this drama,
Jung Jun Won, who played Gong Hyo Jin's loving
husband in the story! I hope he wins some big acting
awards for this role, he deserves it. I had only
previously seen him in the drama Persona
with IU, as well as the lovely films The Table
and Dong Ju: The Portrait Of A Poet, so I
was thrilled to see him land this beautiful lead
role as a sacrificial husband who was so devoted to
his wife that he helped her in all ways possible as
she worked hard to be a good wife to him and a
loving mother to their little daughter (adorable
child actress Hwang Bom I), despite a very secret
double life as a sharpshooter hit-woman towards evil
criminals who had escaped the law. I kept thinking
to myself: gosh, if all men were as magnificent as
THIS husband there would NEVER be any divorces in
this world! ;)
Left to Right (Top): Ha Yul
Ri, Kim Nam Hee, Heo Jae Ho, Kim Ga Hee
Left to Right (Bottom): Mu Jin Sung, Gong Hyo
Jin, Sung Dong Il
The
supporting actors were all terrific too, and
every one of them successfully combined
melodramatic scenes with moments of
laugh-out-loud humor on occasion as well. This
is yet another reason why I continue to
be addicted to Korean dramas after so many
years: their stories combine serious themes with
moments of levity and sometimes you aren't sure
if you're meant to laugh or cry .... so you end
up doing both! Three of my top favorites
pictured above include veteran actor Sung Dong
Il, whom I have seen in too many dramas to
count, and the two younger male actors who were
totally delightful to watch in every scene, Mu
Jin Sung and Kim Nam Hee, who both played
operatives in the secret agency; they
were great at both comic relief and melodramatic
scenes. I found myself smiling every time they
came on screen. All the characters depicted
above belonged to a secret organization which
specialized in planning assassinations of
criminals that the police were never able to
capture or bring to justice. These operatives
wanted to off them before they could kill or
maim other victims in future ever again.
I also loved the
performance of the actor who played the main cop
in the story, Lee Sang Yi. As I watched this
drama I was also watching the ongoing season two
of Bloodhounds
in which he also gives a phenomenal performance.
He's especially fantastic at physical prowess
scenes. Great casting!
The big question of this story is
not who is the sharpshooting killer, because
the viewer knows her identity from the
beginning, but rather a much more pressing
question: how long will she maintain a
balance between these two separate lives, as a
devoted wife and mother, and an assassin?
The Story:
We follow the
quiet double life of Yoo Bona (Gong Hyo Jin), the wife
of Kwon Tae Seong (Jung Jun Won), an investigative
journalist, and the mother of their cute kindergarten
aged daughter, Yul (Hwang Bom I). After a maternity
leave of several years, devoted to raising her little
daughter to school age, Bona decides to rejoin her
previous employer, the Durumi Electronics Company, which
is really just a front for a top secret agency that
manages professional hit targets of criminals who have
escaped justice from the regular city police
departments.
Bona takes special interest
in assassinating those criminals who have abused or
killed children, and gotten away with it, since her own
youth had been a rather stressful one, which is revealed
in several flashbacks as the story progresses. All her
co-workers at the fake electronics company are thrilled
to have her back at work, especially the leader Kim Bong
Pal (Sung Dong Il) and computer expert Ki Young Do (Mu
Jin Sung) who has a secret crush on her, because she had
been their star sharpshooter assassin for years before
her marriage, with the best skills of the entire group.
When she takes up her long distance sharpshooting skills
again for them, with several new assassin cases getting
lots of attention from the media, she is soon nicknamed
Kingfisher by the public, although of course they
all assume the assassin must be a male, not a female.
Even Bona's husband Tae Seong
has no idea of her double life -- at first. However, he
is too good of an investigative reporter not to pick up
on clues as time goes on. He then ultimately has to
decide if he will shield his wife from regular law
enforcement, or eventually turn her in. This decision is
even harder for him because he is best friends with the
main police chief in their city's police department, Lee
Dong Jin (Lee Sang Yi), and feels guilty about lying to
him so many times as even Dong Jin begins to suspect
Bona's true identity. It also doesn't help matters that
Tae Seong's own cute younger sister Kwon Se A (Lee Eun
Saem) has an affectionate relationship with police chief
Dong Jin's right hand man at the police station, Beom
Seong Hoon (Choi Woo Sung). There are a lot of extended
family members and friends and co-workers who would be
terribly hurt if the truth of who the real Kingfisher
is was revealed.
Ultimately
we learn that Bona had received her sharpshooting
training in communist Russia by an expert shooter
nicknamed "Mama" (Moon Jeong Hee), and that a fellow
young trainee had been jealous of Bona's superior
skills. Her name is Layla Choi (Lee Elijah) and she
eventually returns to Korea with the secret
intention of confronting Bona, the successful Kingfisher,
out of jealousy. She plans on ways to kill Bona and
make herself the real Kingfisher,
but she doesn't quite understand that too many
people love and care for Bona and that they will do
everything possible to prevent her murder ... even
those in the regular police department who suspect
Bona's real identity but have no real proof to
arrest her!
Will
the rival Layla finally succeed in her goal to
replace Bona as Kingfisher ...
permanently? She certainly has the determination
to succeed at her goal but in some ways is a bit
messy in her planning and implementation -- after
all, she wasn't the most successful trainee under
"Mama" -- Bona was! The conflict between these two
women comes to a dramatic end, and those last
scenes between the two of them were phenomenal!
The director of A Bona fide Killer, Yoon
Jong Ho (Lovely
Runner), was fantastic in directing
every scene of this drama. I hope he gets awards
for all his hard work.
It was
obvious to the viewers that the entire cast of this
drama enjoyed working with one another very much,
and many fans were expressing at the conclusion
their hope that there will be a season two in
future. I hope so, too! This was truly one of the
top best Korean dramas of 2026. Don't miss it!
Enjoy.
