For me, as a pianist myself since the age of five, the Korean drama classical music masterpiece Four Hands, Two Sonatas was undeniably the very best, most superlative K-drama for the year 2026! The acting by the entire cast, the music and the cinematography, were unparalleled in quality. The flow of the narrative, written by Shin Yi Won, including its incredible, addictive cliffhangers, was brilliantly executed throughout the story by director Park Hyun Suk, and kept the audience mesmerized and enthralled for its full twelve episodes. The online feedback the show received from Korean drama fans was uniformly laudatory.

I sincerely hope there will be a season two for this incomparable Korean drama, for I know I will miss the two main characters like crazy: two young men committed to perfection in classical piano performance, against many odds.

Our two lead male actors had sublime onscreen chemistry together, what perfect casting! It was a total delight to watch them together, especially when they played duets on the piano. Handsome actor Song Kang (above right) had been in fine dramas before such as Navillera, Nevertheless, and the Love Alarm series, but this drama performance outshone them all, in my opinion. His talented cast-mate Lee Jun Young (above left) had appeared in great dramas such as When Life Gives You Tangerines, Melo Movie, and the dynamic D.P. series, yet once again I feel his performance here in Four Hands, Two Sonatas was the best of the bunch.

The Story:

We meet two gifted male music students, friends from childhood, who both attend the prestigious, private Korea Arts High School majoring in classical piano performance. Kang Pi O (Song Kang) is a brilliant technical pianist virtuoso but his rather grumpy grandfather Kang Seung Woon (Jung Jin Young, Angel Eyes), who works as an orchestra conductor, repeatedly expresses disappointment in how Pi O delivers his music emotionally (I thought he was emotional in his own way, and why didn't Grandpa ever tell him HOW to make his music more emotional if he was so disappointed?! Grrr!) so Pi O is always sad how unsupported he feels by his professional musician Grandpa. Even Pi O's beautiful Mom, Kang Ji Hye (Yoon Se Ah, A Gentleman's Dignity), is angry at how her Dad treats her talented son and she often yells at him to stop being so critical of Pi O. It seems her whole life centers on promoting her talented son to the public. She doesn't want to acknowledge that Pi O's Grandpa is also disappointed in her because she doesn't really know for sure which man impregnated her in her younger years! (What a complicated family!).

Pi O's best friend is another talented piano student at the school, named Choi Jeong Yo (Lee Jun Young), who also has a less than ideal family support system; his Dad Choi Ki Taek (Sung No Jin) is often drunk and in trouble with loan sharks and the police, and so Jeong Yo often lives alone, supporting himself working at a convenience store after school. He plays classical piano very beautifully but he suffers from stage fright which often puts him in a disadvantage during school music competitions. Pi O has compassion for him and teaches him ways to overcome his stage fright. He also fights off bullies at school who go after Jeong Yo. Both boys often go off together to a little antique piano store and play duets together in peace, and in their spare time they also like to write their own music. Jeong Yo also sometimes tries to encourage Pi O to play more emotionally to attract an audience. So both boys help one another musically and they both improve so much they become unrivaled at the school.

They both have a pretty and supportive female friend named Hong Jae In (Jang Gyu Ri, When The Phone Rings) who plays the violin, and she encourages both boys in their hard work on mastering the piano flawlessly, even though it becomes obvious early on that she is a bit more fond of Pi O than Jeong Yo.

Eventually both boys prepare to enter a very prestigious classical piano contest in Prague in Europe. They work very hard to prepare and they know they will be competing against one another, as well as classical pianists from around the world, but it doesn't seem to harm their friendship. At first. However, in the background is one very nervous Mom in Ji Hye who is desperate -- for her own ambition -- to have her son Pi O win this international piano contest, so she secretly arranges for two thugs in Europe (actors Joshua Newton and Mitch Craig) to kidnap her son's chief rival in the contest, his best friend Jeong Yo. She pays them off well and they pretend to be the drivers to take Jeong Yo to the contest, but instead drive out into the country far from Prague. Jeong Yo realizes something is not right, that he is in danger, and demands to be taken back to the contest venue, but when they don't obey he attacks them in the vehicle, jumps out, and runs for his life. The thugs chase after him and one shoots him in the shoulder! Jeong Yo falls into a lake unconscious and the two thugs quickly retreat to their car and drive away.

Little do they know that Jeong Yo was not killed but rescued by monks at a nearby monastery. When he comes to he has no memory of his identity. The monks nurture him, give him a symbolic new name, and allow him to live in peace in the monastery with them. Over the years he becomes interested in learning how to conduct an orchestra: his innate love of music did not vanish after the shooting; however, whenever he tries to play a piano one of his hands won't perform well because of vein damage done when he was shot by the kidnapping thug. Over time Jeong Yo becomes such an excellent orchestra conductor that he is hired by various European orchestras and becomes famous for his skill in all of Europe.

Meanwhile, when Jeong Yo did not arrive for the contest in Prague his friend Pi O wins the contest by default and becomes world famous. His mother is thrilled. Even his Grandpa, for one moment while watching him play the piano, seems to be impressed by the new quality of his emotional performance (not realizing that part of that was due to Jeong Yo's encouragement to Pi O).

However, when Pi O realizes his best friend never showed up for the contest he is shaken to his core. He tries for nine years to track down where he might be, even if he is still alive or dead. With his friend missing for all those years Pi O becomes a successful musician on his own: his CDs are best sellers and any financial concerns he might have had previously are now gone. He spends some of his own money for years trying to find out what happened to Jeong Yo, even hiring a detective friend named Martin Vogel (Ko Chang Seok) who lives in Prague to help him out. His female friend / sweetheart Jae In becomes employed by his music agency, Eden Classical Music Management, and she is in charge of arranging his worldwide piano concert performances and CD sales for big money. He is also nurtured by its manager Do Hyun Soo (Kim Joo Hun, Soundtrack #1) who just might be his biological Dad, since he obviously still has a rather intense personal relationship with Pi O's Mom.

Then on one amazing day Pi O pays for a ticket to see a European orchestra play and to his utter shock he recognizes his old friend Jeong Yo as the conductor! After the concert he tries to meet with him in person but after some tense refusals Jeong Yo agrees to meet with him. He seems to have no memory at all of his old friend but little by little it becomes obvious that Jeong Yo remembers more of his past now than what he had revealed to anyone. Pi O carries the news back to Korea that Jeong Yo is still alive, and this news in particular shocks his Mom and Grandpa. Mom has a lot to cover up, in particular, since she had arranged with the thugs to kidnap Jeong Yo. When Pi O suspects his Mom's involvement in the kidnapping she threatens to commit suicide if Pi O goes to the police. Shaken to his core Pi O keeps silent to protect Mom. However, Jeong Yo resents Pi O not coming forward with the truth and starts to plan a revenge against his old friend and his family. He writes his own revenge themed orchestra piece with piano accompaniment and tries to pressure Pi O to play it in concert with him, but when Pi O agrees and practices with Jeong Yo and his orchestra Jeong Yo ridicules him publicly for playing his piece all wrong. He fires Pi O, which hurts Pi O's reputation with the concert going public. Another Korean pianist is hired in his place (although it soon becomes obvious he can't touch Pi O's passionate playing).

Pi O is miserable now and wants to escape from his music career altogether. His family and friends are distraught about this decision. They try to convince Jeong Yo to change his mind and let Pi O try again but Jeong Yo stubbornly denies their requests. Can this long dead friendship ever be revived? Will Pi O's mother ever pay a price for the kidnapping she planned so long ago? Will Grandpa ever reconcile with Pi O, acknowledging that he could have done much better in encouraging Pi O in his piano playing? Can these two young men ever forgive one another and restore their love for classical music together?

For me this is the ultimate theme of Four Hands, Two Sonatas: the possibility of restoring a deep friendship through mutual forgiveness and love of music. Although I will always sentimentally believe that the classic Beethoven Virus drama is the very best classical music-themed Korean series ever made, Four Hands, Two Sonatas has now become a very close second in my heart. There are so many delights in this series, including beautiful film-making in Europe, all the classical music in the OST, and even sometimes the Korean characters speaking English! :)  Watch it on Netflix and enjoy its exquisite brilliance for yourselves. You will not regret it. Enjoy!
