JTBC (2021) 10 Episodes
Romance, Grade: C+
Korean Drama Review by Winnie, USA (No End Spoilers)
~~~~~~~~~~~
Nevertheless
(2021) came out on Netflix during the height of the
COVID crisis, and so I was more likely to watch dramas
then that I wouldn't ordinarily watch, just out of
boredom! This drama was a bit rough for me, with
multiple simulated sex scenes, so much so that I thought
I was watching an American television show. Like many
K-drama fans I like to escape to Korean dramas to avoid
that steamy stuff. I was glad this one was only ten
episodes long and I was relieved when it was over. The
ratings for this one in Korea were poor, too, only about
1 to 2 percent.
The main actors included Song
Kang from the Love
Alarm double series, and Han So Hee from the
far superior Soundtrack
1, 100
Days My Prince, and My
Name. They were solid actors, it was just
the script that annoyed me. It was based on a web-toon
by Jung Seo, and directed by Kim Ga Ram. People who read
the web-toon first said they preferred the toon over the
TV version.
The
Story:
University student Park Jae Eon (Song Kang) is a
talented art major. He appears affable on the
outside but deep down he has trouble sincerely
caring about people, especially the women he dates.
He has no interest in a true romantic relationship,
only one night stands.
Then he meets an
especially talented female art student majoring in
sculpture named Yoo Na Bi (nabi is the word for
butterfly in Korean) and surprisingly he finds
himself starting to care for her, but is slow to
admit to himself that he does. She in turn is slow
to warm to him since she recently broke up with a
boyfriend because he was cheating on her.
They do have one thing in
common though: they love Art. With such a shared
passion they slowly get past their romantic
avoidance syndromes and begin to get serious with
one another, although it escalates physically before
it starts to deepen romantically.
Family
and friends are wary about their growing
relationship but ultimately it will be up to
both of them as individuals to decide if what
they feel for one another is just a passing
fancy or something truly meaningful and real. As
graduation time approaches those decisions
become even more critical to both of them.
Check it out on Netflix to see what you think
about it. For some reason I only saw an English
dub available for this drama, which was another
reason I had trouble warming to it. Long time
Korean drama fans want to hear the original
actors' voices, not poor English dubs.
