The Husband (2026) is an exciting, addictive Korean romantic thriller that dares to begin by depicting the crumbling relationship of a once loving husband and wife, and then abruptly turning into a kidnapping story full of mesmerizing plot twists combined with deliberate ambiguity to keep the audience guessing as the story unfolds. It is written by the same writer of the ground-breaking medical thriller Hyper Knife (2025) Jung Jae Ha. He is a master at writing his own original dramas apart from relying on the oft-used prior webtoon device. In doing so the audience can't rely on a webtoon to figure out ahead of time how a story will end. Refreshing. I like to be kept guessing until the end of a drama! That is why in my reviews I rarely include end spoilers: you should watch the dramas yourselves to enjoy the flow of the story till the end without knowing the result ahead of time. The directors of this brilliant original drama series were Kim Jung Hyun (Main) and Kim Min Tae (Assistant) who had previously worked on Hyper Knife as well.

Our two main leads, the always extraordinary actor Nam Goong Min and the always lovely Lee Seol, who had previously worked together in my number one favorite Korean drama of 2025, Our Movie, both gave amazing, complicated performances here as a once loving married couple who experienced a tragedy and blamed each other for it, resulting in their marriage beginning to disintegrate rapidly. It took a bit of an adjustment for me at first to see them together as a couple since in their previous drama together, Our Movie, Lee Seol had played the second female lead who had had a crush on him, but he had been in love with someone else. Here they played a married couple and it took me pretty much the whole first episode to picture them together as a once loving married couple!

 

Our main villain is the totally awesome character actor Kim Dae Myung whom I had only seen before in nice, even jovial character roles in dramas like Hospital Playlist, Misaeng, and The Sound Of Your Heart. In this drama I was totally wowed by him playing this multi-dimensional bad guy and now I wonder if I can ever picture him playing a nice guy role ever again! Time will tell. I really hope he wins several acting awards for his amazing performance here in The Husband!

The Story:

This series tells the intense personal story of Kang Taeju (Nam Goong Min) a nationally known and awarded neurosurgeon at Seoul's prestigious Uri Hamkke Hospital. On the outside he is a perfect gentleman, but behind the scenes of his crumbling marriage with Go Seyun (Lee Seol), the chaebol heiress of the chairman of the hospital's executive board, Go Dong Chan (veteran actor Jang Gwang), he is miserably unhappy. They had once been quite devoted and understanding of one another's different personalities, and had even been happy raising their tiny daughter together, but now they barely speak to one another and no longer share the same bed. Out in public they pretend everything is fine but even when they meet accidentally on the street they are close-lipped and distant.

It is not until later in the drama that the cause of their sadness is revealed: their little daughter had died of a medical emergency and when it befell her Taeju had been in the middle of an emergency patient's operation, a man who would have been paralyzed for life if he had left the operating room in the middle of it to attend to his own daughter's emergency operation. Other doctors had been called in to operate but it had not gone well and the toddler had died. Seyun had blamed her husband for not rushing to their daughter's side during her emergency. At the time it happened she had screamed for the hospital staff to alert her husband about their daughter's emergency, but her own Dad, the chairman of the hospital, had blocked the staff from interrupting Taeju from finishing the operation for the rich client. Goodness, he had prevented his own son-in-law from knowing about his own daughter's medical emergency until it was too late! Grandad seemed to care about the rich patient's welfare over the welfare of his own grand-daughter!

Out of his own despair over losing his daughter in this way, and having his own wife unfairly blaming him for not rushing to their toddler's side during her medical crisis, Taeju stubbornly does not reveal to his wife that it had not been his fault because he had never been informed about her tragedy during the other patient's operation. This of course results in Seyun blaming him even more for not trying to save their daughter (when the one who really was to blame was her own Dad).

Finally Taeju has had enough and asks Seyun for a divorce. However, when he was about to start divorce proceedings one night everything fell apart. Seyun is inexplicably kidnapped by an unknown person (or persons) and Taeju is frightened when he receives a call from the kidnapper to hand over a huge ransom in cash at a distant location in order to ensure his wife's release. The kidnapper even sends him a video on his cell phone of a time when Taeju had taken a cab, sadly informed the driver of his personal tragedies, was given a cask of alcohol by the driver to drink to calm his nerves, and Taeju had drunkingly asked the driver to get rid of his wife! It soon becomes obvious that the cab driver was the kidnapper and Taeju has to decide if he should go to the police for help or handle the dangerous situation on his own. He ends up going to Seyun's corrupt Dad for the ransom money and now he and his own frigntened wife Choi Suk Young (veteran actress Oh Min Ae) are involved in the case as well. Taeju eventually figures out the kidnapper's name, Noh Man Hee (Kim Dae Myung), and has to try and second guess the kidnapper's next moves. Eventually he discovers that this Noh Man Hee has an accomplice in the kidnapping who proves to be his own wife named Kim Kyung Ae (Lee Sang Hee, creepy acting job, too!). She is in the next room to Seyun's hidden cell pretending to be a kidnapped victim too! The two women talk to each other between the wall that separates them, and Kyung Ae tells Seyun that they both will be killed when an hourglass in both their rooms finishes dropping the pellets inside. Seyun can only hope she can outwit the kidnapper when he shows up to kill her when the hourglass runs out of time, and if a ransom is not given to him in time by Taeju and/or her family.

Taeju eventually gets the police involved with the case, headed up by chief policeman Jang Do Sik (Lee Seok), but they are slow to figure out the complicated case and initially arrest Taeju himself as the kidnapper suspect! It takes some time to realize that they are wrong and Taeju is released, convinced now he has to take justice into his own hands. Can Taeju second guess and confront Noh Man Hee in time to save his wife?

As it turns out Noh Man Hee had committed other crimes, which includes the murder of another doctor named Lee Su Hyeong (wonderful character actor Park Byung Eun) whose own wife had also been murdered by Noh, and a criminal relationship with a doctor at the hospital named Choi Chi Woong (Woo Ji Hyun) who has always been jealous of Taeju's 87% success rate in surgery whereas Dr. Choi's success rate at surgery was only 13%!

When Taeju realizes Dr. Choi's involvement he now has at least three main villains out to destroy him, kidnapper Noh Man Hee, his corrupt wife Lee Sang Hee who pretends to be a victim in the cell next to Seyun, and Dr. Choi. He also uncovers that his own father-in-law Go Dong Chan had secretly been involved in an illegal stem cell set-up using the stolen cells from aborted fetuses, which is illegal in Korea (they are supposedly much more beneficial in medical treatments relying on stem cells for medical success). Dr. Choi easily blackmails Go Dong Chan on this issue, causing Dr. Choi to turn completely evil and try to kill Taeju as well!

Yet Another Phenomenal Performance by Nam Goong Min!
They Just Keep Coming and Coming and Coming!

Will Taeju ever be able to save his wife from her dungeon cell? Will he ever be able to bring to justice all the people who want to see him dead? If his wife is ever saved will she finally discover the truth about the tragic death of their little daughter, and be able to forgive Taeju for not saving her? There are so many surprising twists and turns in The Husband drama that it would take me many more web pages to uncover them all here. ;) You really need to watch this phenomenal thriller and experience them for yourselves. Once again, streaming Disney+ / HULU has signed on to an above excellent Korean drama, that if it had been smartly picked up by Netflix instead, would be a worldwide streaming hit for K-drama fans. Don't miss it because of Netflix's stupidity in not picking it up! ;) Enjoy!
