~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I watched
this Korean drama Suits (2018) because I love
both lead male actors, veteran Jang Dong Gun (A
Gentleman's Dignity), and newer actor Park
Hyung Sik (Heirs).
I thought they made an excellent team! South Korea seems
to favor a trend of setting up younger actors with older
actors with more on-screen experience so that the
younger actor can go to school on the older and learn
more about the art of acting than if they just took an
acting class or relied solely on the director to tell
them how to emote for scenes.
This Korean drama was based
on a popular Japanese television drama and the
derivative Korean script was written by Kim Jung Min,
and the directors were Kim Jin Woo and Kwon Yong Il. The
drama lasted sixteen episodes long but I think with more
judicious editing it could have gone down to twelve
episodes and flowed more smoothly, without sacrificing
quality. This is a good drama to watch on weekends. It
might be too tiring if you work in an office all day to
come home at night and watch a drama set in another
business environment. It's up to you! Just a fair
warning. I work at home so it didn't bother me to take
breaks and fill them up with watching two great looking
Korean men!
The Story:
We meet Choi
Kang Seok (Jang Dong Gun) who is the best lawyer at the
prestigious Kang & Ham Law Firm in Seoul. At the
beginning of the story he is promoted to a senior
partner by the head honchos in his firm but truthfully
may not be quite fully ready yet for all that extra
responsibility in his office.
Then we meet the much
younger Go Yeon Woo (Park Hyung Sik) who has a
photographic memory and excellent comprehension skills.
He dreamed of becoming a lawyer but due to his poor
family background he currently only works as a parking
valet. To pay for his grandmother's expensive hospital
bills he takes a job to deliver what may be illegal
drugs to a suspicious hotel room. During a visit to the
hotel room Go Yeon Woo realizes that he is falling into
a trap and may need help to extricate himself from the
bad situation.
Go Yeon Woo is then chased down by the police, but he
manages to get into the chief secretary's office for
Lawyer Choi Kang Seok. At that same time a group of
young lawyers are waiting to take interviews with Choi
Kang Seok. He is going to select a rookie lawyer for the
law firm after conducting these interviews. Go Yeon Woo
pretends to be a legal candidate and is then admitted
into Choi Kang Seok's office.
During his interview with
this non-lawyer but bright kid Choi Kang Seok senses
that Go Yeon Woo is not the applicant they called in for
the interview, but he is still very much impressed with
Go Yeon Woo's intelligence & photographic memory.
Those are definitely exceptional talents than can help
any job applicant, not just one for a rookie legal job.
Against his better judgment, Choi Kang Seok decides to
hire Go Yeon Woo as a rookie lawyer, even though the kid
does not have a license to practice law. Choi Kang
Seok's decision could even place his own legal career in
jeopardy at the Kang & Ham Law Firm. (Why he didn't
just hire him as a paralegal I have no idea!).
What will come of this odd
professional coupling? Will both men be fired from the
prestigious law firm, or will they manage to succeed
regardless?
Please Watch My Dramas! I Love To
Act! ;)
There isn't much romance to
speak of in this drama. There are attractive females
floating around (actresses Jin Hee Kyung, Chae Jung An,
Ko Sung Hee) but I feel their parts could
have been played by any reasonably talented Korean
actresses. The main focus is always first on the
handsome two male lead characters and that's as it
should be. Check it out and see if you like it. For me
this kind of talent just can't go wrong!
